Well well, even though town is quiet at the moment and catching it’s collective breath after the drama of the Rugby World Cup (Wheww, go All Blacks!!!), things in the world of southern hemisphere mountain biking are getting ready to EXPLODE! With the Skyline Gondola open to bikes, all of a sudden mountain biking’s own world cup super stars are arriving in town. Known already to be a favorite destination of the Atherton kids, now Australia’s Nathan Rennie will be arriving to host and teach at Lower 45 Gravity Camps! Camps taught by pro riders are nothing new to the slopes of Whistler or the European Alps, but they are new to Queenstown, and it is great to see events like this raising our profile in the rest of the world. Not only that, but now kiwis have access to tips and development opportunities from the best in the world, right in their own back yard. To me this is a real mark of distinction and I think Queenstown should be proud to have these guys coming to town to do their thing. Hopefully this means even more exposure overseas, online, in movies and in mags, giving QT the press it deserves as an international mountain biking destination.
The Southern Downhill Series is also coming to town, next week! I can’t believe its come around so fast! With the Down Hill series running on a yet to be named track up skyline (dare I hazard a guess that WC 98 might be rekindled??? Who knows…) and a Big Bike sale/swap going down in the camping ground, followed by a BBQ at the Hub at Pinewood Lodge, I smell a super fun weekend coming up. There should be some ripping good action to watch and some great mountain biking culture to soak in, hope to see lots of smiling faces there!
