Autumn in the air

Bang, first of March…

Summer is over!  What happened??? I blinked and it was gone…

Mornings are darker and cooler, the air is crisp and the beach is no longer full of scantily clad back packers.  In a way I almost will this time of year to arrive.  There is something special about riding in autumn.  The temperature is better for riding bikes, the dirt is, well, dirt and not so much dust. The colours of changing leaves enliven trails that have been ridden to death over a long hot summer and there is that bittersweet feeling around the edges, as you cherish those moments in the autumn sun, shorter, but somehow more poignant than the long lazy days of summer.  There is a real and urgent need to get out and make the most of beautiful sunny days as we all know that winter is soon to follow… mud, rain, snow, not a mountain biker’s preferred environment… And of course there is the inevitable autumnal exodus of the summer folk, the carefree sun worshiping biking nomads that represent at least one ventricle in the heart of the MTB community in Queenstown, friends that are cherished and will be absent until winter lets go of its grip on the southern hemisphere.

So what to do??? Get out and make the most of it, the memories of these crisp yet warm autumn days with epic dirt and changing colours will be some of the most enduring ones as we look back from the colder months to come…
